Roatán, Honduras: why the Bay Islands belong on your list

Turquoise water, a world-class reef and a pace of life that slows you down the minute you land.

Calm turquoise Caribbean water below green island hills

Roatán is the largest of Honduras’s Bay Islands, a long, green ridge of an island in the western Caribbean. It sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. The reef is the big draw: you can step off the beach into clear, calm water full of coral and tropical fish.

But Roatán isn’t only for divers. It has soft-sand beaches, waterfront restaurants, hillside jungle and a relaxed island culture where English is widely spoken. It’s easy to love even if you never put on a mask.

West Bay and West End: the island’s two favorites

West Bay Beach is the postcard: a long curve of pale sand and turquoise water, with good snorkeling a short swim from shore. Mornings are the quietest time to go.

West End is the island’s laid-back village, a strip of dive shops, beach bars and casual restaurants where flip-flops are the dress code and sunsets are an event. The two are close together, so staying between them puts both within easy reach.

What to do

  • Snorkel or dive the reef. Roatán is one of the Caribbean’s best-known dive destinations, with options for first-timers and certified divers alike.
  • Get out on the water. Kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing charters and boat trips are all easy to arrange.
  • Head inland. The island’s hilly interior has jungle trails, lookout points and wildlife parks.
  • Slow down. Honestly, a hammock, a good book and that water view might be the best activity of all.

Where to stay: a home base that does it all

For families and groups, a private villa beats a hotel: room to spread out, a full kitchen, and a pool that’s all yours. One we love is Exit Strategy, a custom three-level estate on a hillside between West Bay Beach and West End.
