A day on Shell Island: how to go and what to bring
No roads, no buildings, just sand, shells and clear water. Here’s how to make the most of Panama City Beach’s favorite day trip.

Shell Island is an undeveloped barrier island across the mouth of St. Andrew Bay, just east of Panama City Beach. You can only get there by boat, and that’s exactly why people love it. It’s a great spot for shelling, swimming and a long, quiet beach walk.
Getting there
- Shuttle from St. Andrews State Park. The park runs a shuttle boat to the island. It’s the easiest option for most visitors. Park admission is charged per vehicle.
- Boat tours and charters. Local operators run trips that often add dolphin watching or snorkeling.
- Your own boat or a rental. If you’re comfortable on the water, many marinas rent boats by the day.
Shuttle schedules and prices change with the season. Check with the park before you go.
What to bring
Plan to bring everything you’ll need for the day, and take it all back with you.
- Plenty of water and snacks or a packed lunch
- Reef-safe sunscreen, hats and sunglasses
- Shade: a beach umbrella or a light pop-up
- Mask and snorkel for the clear water
- A mesh bag for shells, and a bag for your trash
- Water shoes, if anyone in your group likes them
Tips for a great day
- Go early. Mornings are calmer and less crowded.
- Check the weather and the flags. Conditions can change quickly in summer afternoons.
- Leave live shells where they are. Collect only empty ones and treat the wildlife gently.
- Leave no trace. Whatever you bring comes back with you.
